Questions

NCAA Eligibility FAQ

What are the NCAA core-course requirements?

Both Division I and Division II require 16 NCAA-approved core courses. Which classes at your school count is decided by the NCAA, so check the approved list for your school through the Eligibility Center and confirm your schedule with your counselor each year.

What GPA do I need to be eligible?

The minimum core-course GPA is 2.3 for Division I and 2.2 for Division II. The core-course GPA is calculated on your NCAA core courses rather than your overall GPA. Requirements can change, so verify the current standard at eligibilitycenter.org.

Do I still need an SAT or ACT score?

The NCAA no longer requires an SAT or ACT score for initial eligibility. Individual colleges may still ask for test scores as part of admissions, so check each school you are considering separately.

When should I register with the NCAA Eligibility Center?

Lockerroom's eligibility timeline places registration in the grade 10 to grade 11 window so there is time for transcripts and the amateurism questionnaire to be processed before recruiting and signing decisions; confirm timing with your counselor and the Eligibility Center. Lockerroom’s eligibility guidance sends reminders when it is time to register and tracks your NCAA ID once you have one.

Does Lockerroom submit my records to the NCAA?

No. The NCAA does not offer a public API, and registration requires a secure login to its portal. Lockerroom tracks core courses, GPA and documents, stores transcripts and exports NCAA-friendly reports so you and your school can complete the official submission with everything organized.

What if I am looking at NAIA or NJCAA schools?

The NAIA and NJCAA each have their own eligibility standards and registration processes that differ from the NCAA. The free Athlete Passport includes NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA information so families can see the pathway for each association side by side.
